A. Wi-Fi comes from wireless signals that transfer from wireless router. Your internet company may have given you a wireless one (it'll have antennas) or they may have not (just a simple box.) If you have just a simple box, you can purchase an additional Wi-Fi box for at least $50 from a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

What is the difference between ethernet and wi fi?
Q. I bought a computer on ebay and it says it has an ethernet card. What is it exactly? Do you plug it into the wall or can you access internet anywhere with it or is that just Wi-Fi? How do you know your computer is capable of having Wi-Fi? Thanks!

A. Ethernet the most common type of cabled network connection Wifi is the most common type of wireless network connection (although it works only within range of a wireless router, not 'anywhere'). You know if a computer is capable if Wifi if: * The specification says it is * You've fitted a Wifi adapter or * You've examined the hardware and found a Wifi adapter

How to ensure that my wi-fi broadband connection is not misused?
Q. I have got broadband internet connection with wi-fi router. Though my desktop is connected through cable, I have to keep the router on for accessing the net. A. It's understandable that you want to secure your network. Otherwise, your neighbors might be able to access the computers on your network, or they might do something illegal which will then be tracked to your location. First, make sure that you turn on your wifi security protocols, such as WEP. Make sure you use a key that's not easy to break, and change it every so often. WEP is the easiest to crack (thus the changing of the key from time to time), but it takes some know how. If you leave your wifi unencrypted, a side effect will be that people with packet sniffers might be watching your activities. Next, turn on MAC filters. Enter the MAC addresses of all of your stuff (desktops, laptops, PDA, xbox, etc.) That way, the router… [cont.]

How can I tell if my wi/fi is broken?
Q. My asus netbook suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. The wi/fi is turned on, and everything about it works besides the fact that it can't enable. (I know it's nothing to do with the modem because other computers in my house are fine) So how can I tell if my wi/fi is broken? And if it is, is that something that would be covered in my year long warranty with asus?

A. Hello, Yes this would be covered as its part of the package. Scan for networks broadcasting signals, if it does not pick anything up as usual, something is wrong. Contact Asus and see if they can offer you support or a fix. -S.Majer -HostMySite.com Technical Support Representative

How does free wi-fi internet access work? Does this mean I don't need a ISP at all?
Q. My local library offers free wi-fi internet. I want to buy a netbook computer which has a built in wi-fi receiving modem. Is this all I need? A. Yes you don't need an isp, but you can only use the wi-fi close to the library or coffee shop. Its great if you live next door to the library 'cos then you can use their internet, but if you live miles away from the library you wont be able to use the internet at home, you'll need to go to the library every time. Also some of these free wi-fi's you need to go into the place and ask for the SSID and password to access their network as it's hidden to stop everyone accessing it. If it is hidden you'll need to add it manually, in Vista you do this by adding a new network, or in XP you have to double click on the wi-fi icon and click change the order of preferred networks and add one there, make sure you add a tick to the box that says "conne [cont.]

How can i block out certain wi fi connections at will?
Q. We have a wi fi network in my house, but our connection is not the fastest. I can play xbox live only if there are no other computers on the internet. Is there any type of software that can monitor my network, or let me block certain computers from connecting just for certain periods of time so i can get the full connection?

A. If you're not the network administrator, you're going to have a hard time doing this. If it's someone else, ask him. What you can do as the network administrator is go into the settings menu for your wireless router (which is usually a web browser) and filter out other MAC addresses, either by blocking everyone else or allowing only yours. You can find your XBOX's MAC address in its system information menu. If you can't figure that out, just unplug or turn off all of the other computers in the house that use the wireless router.
