Any suggestions on how to stain brand-new maple cabinets to a dark chocolate-like color?
Q. I just bought a new house and it comes with new light maple cabinets. Rather than upgrading to a different color cabinet which can run up to $1200, we are thinking about staining the standard cabinets and save ourselves some money for other upgrades. Is it recommended and what is the best way to go about it? Obviously I plan to stain them before we move in.

A. I agree with Sophie. From the way you are talking, these cabinets are already finished. If so, you would have to remove that finish by sanding, which would be a lot of work. Wood is porous, when you finish it the pores of the wood get filled up. Even with sanding, some of the pores may be still filled up from the original finish and therefore not take stain and then the stain may not take evenly. I would recommed getting the color of cabinet you want and saving some of your other upgrades for later. I had a house built a few years ago and can give you some hits on what you probably should do now and what you can save for later. Things to change now: Cabinets Extra garage space Adding phone jacks Adding cable outlets Adding plug-ins [cont.]

A. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours: I think "rambling rose" (# 6305) would make the black & maple POP. You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website: You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

A. I would pick Nutmeg. You can add any color in your kitchen to go with it. You'll be limited with cranberry. I think it is a warm and richer color also.

Is there any stain color that will match ashland maple cabinets from American woodmark?
Q. I have ashland maple cabinets from American woodmark. I am having a terrible time trying to match it with any stain for my crown molding. I tried colonial maple stain and it looks hideous. Any suggestions?

A. You can take the same stain from the same can and apply it to 14 different woods and get 14 different appearances. Heck, you can apply it to two different pieces of wood from the same tree and it looks different. The best thing to do is to take what you want to stain into your local paint store (not a big box store), and what you want it matched to. Ask for a stain match. They'll use the backside of whatever you're staining and get it as close as possible. Make sure your sample is large enough and of the actual stained wood, not a picture. Photos of stains are worthless for this. Matching transparent stains is kind of an art form and isn't the easiest type of match to do. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this to someone you really… [cont.]

A. Try terra cotta or a light ivory for the floors, depending on how big the room is. Get a counter top with flecks of the maple 'color', other 'earth' neutrals [ beige, tan, caramel, chocolate ], the floor color, and ivory for the background. Walls could be any color, but he'd probably like sage, with burlap curtains, and burnt orange tiebacks? Good luck, and have fun!

What color should I use for new counter tops & flooring with maple cabinets?
Q. I recently refinished the maple kitchen cabinets in my 1935 home and now want to replace the old counter tops to complement the lovely maple color. My walls are a pale creamy peach and there is a horrendous grey-black wall to wall rug. What colors should I use for the counter tops and a new floor covering? A. Have you ever thought of using flexible tile on your counters. Ones that look like vintage stone? This I believe is something relatively new. I can only afford so much to redue my kitchen. cabinets and walls are already done, am looking into using the flexible tile for my countertops and Actually Painting my floor since its in good shape. Anyways, With the maple finished cabinets, I would go for a more granite look on counters, and rip up the carpet to see what ya have. If wood, you can sand it and refinish that in a maple. That would look very nice. Or you can paint it, put a design on it to make like you have and antique floor. then polyurethane it to seal it. Or use floor covering. white cabinets wood floors?
Q. I am having a new home built and cannot decide on the kitchen cabinet colors. I can either go with a maple or white cabinets. I like the look of white cabinets with the beige granite with dark veins in it. However, if I do this, should I go with a dark floor? I also don't know if it will make my kitchen look cheap with the white. I need help deciding. There is a lot of cabinets in this kitchen with a HUGE island in the center, so a wrong mistake on the cabinet color I feel will throw everything off.

A. What is your lifestyle, family composition, and area you live in? Have you compared ALL your color choices in ALL lights? What looks good in the store, on a website, or in a catalog may look horrendous in your kitchen. Natural and artificial light can make colors appear different, and while the beige granite may tone with white cabinets in the store, in your kitchen it might look pretty, um, stupid. I do a LOT of cooking, and after five years of being sick and tired of trying to keep my white kitchen cabinets clean (including those grubby little fingerprints), I tore them out and put in wood. If you like the look of white, go with a blonde/light/natural pine finish. Both pine and maple, in my opinion, are very warm and inviting, and… [cont.]

What looks better, shiny or matt cabinets?
Q. WE are having maple cabinets built by a cabinet maker. We are using a medium dark stain and think a little shiny coat on top will look better than flat finish. Builder says no, but how about you? Appliances are white with marble granite counters with a little of wood color in it and many more. This, granite is polished too. We are using backslash of 4X4 flat tile in light beige tones and a few 2X2 or 4X4 tiles of granite from counter embedded in backsplash. Only a few of them. This is flat except for little pieces of granite. Thank you

A. A shinier surface is always a little more flashy if the cabinets are being made I would also go with shinny finish. This finish is also easier to clean and wipe off verses a mat finish. Also if you walls and ceilings in this room are a satin or eggshell finish or even a mat the new cabinets will stand out nicely
