The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is an independent agency of the United States government. The Commodity Exchange Act (CEA), 7 U.S.C. § 1 et seq., prohibits fraudulent conduct in the trading of futures contracts. In 1974, Congress amended the Act to create a more comprehensive regulatory framework for the trading of futures contracts and created the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, replacing the Commodity Exchange Authority. The stated mission of the CFTC is to protect market users and the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to the sale of commodity and financial futures and options, and to foster open, competitive, and financially sound futures and option markets. Brief historyFutures contracts for agricultural commodities have been traded in the U.S. for more than 150 years and have been under Federal regulation since the 1920s. In recent years, trading in futures contracts has expanded rapidly beyond traditional physical and agricultural commodities into a vast array of financial instruments, including foreign currencies, U.S. and foreign government securities, and U.S. and foreign stock indices. After leaving Congress, Gramm became Vice Chairman of UBS, and UBS is currently under investigation for recruiting and assisting wealthy Americans evade their income taxes. When he first joined McCain's campaign, he was still lobbying Congress on behalf of UBS to pass laws aimed at preventing US states from enacting their own laws against predatory lending practices. Having invested in stocks for quite sometime, I am thinking to get into the commodity trading world. As a beginner in futures and options on futures, I would like to seek advice on the names of brokerage firms for such investment. I wonder what are the most popular online commodity brokerage firms (like TDAmeritrade for stocks) for setting up self-directed accounts with reasonable commissions, fees and requirements for opening accounts. Many thanks. Q. I consider myself a somewhat sophisticated investor and plan to trade options, commodities, short sell stocks and of course execute regular trades. I do not expect to trade derivatives (financial futures). I have a reasonably small amount of money to manage thus far--5 to 10 thousand. If I go for a high-end broker, I will lose too much on the commissions and fees. I do not need professional help, I do not need live support, I do not need their analysis. I need a cheap way to execute the above mentioned trades. -Thank you in advance for your considerate replies important detail I left out: I am not really interested in level 1 options. I am more interested in level 2-3. (3 being most preferable). I didn't mean sophisticated in that… [cont.] Asked by Guardian A - Wed Apr 2 23:04:36 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments From Yahoo Answer Search: "Commodity Futures Trading Commission"
