Can my company use software that has an academic license?
Q. I work for a non-profit agency and want to procure computer software. Academic licenses are, of course, less expensive. I found a couple vendor sites that says that academic licenses can be used for education or commercial purposes. Is this really true?

A. The short answer is "no". Academic licensing is expressly for the use of an academic institution or student. I would contact the vendor or software manufacturer directly. I have seen some software sites that gave licensing based on academic OR not-for-profit. I think it is up to each individual software manufacturer and what they decide. Most likely if you ask, they will give you a comparable license or reduced rate.
